This 10.5:1 oversize bore kit increases displacement from 1570 to 1690cc. This 8% increase in cylinder volume increase HP 8, 8%x125 HP) = 10HP INCREASE. The increase in compression to 10.5:1 adds about 4 HP, bringing the total gain to an estimated 14HP.  

With our 424/425 camshaft combination and big valves, it can make about 150 very comfortable street performance ponies.  This has now become a universally celebrated success with 1600 builders.

COMPRESSION:

  • Compression of 10.5:1 is very happy with 90-93 octane fuel.
  • 1600 NORMALE AND 105 SERIES.  Compression of 10.5:1 is measured with standard head of 112mm height (101/105 heads) and 1.4mm Reinze gasket.
  • 1600 VELOCE compression will be 11.5:1 because these heads are Normale heads milled 1.0mm (.040") by the factory.  For 10.5:1 compression, add $200 for special order and specify in "Customer Comment" box when ordering online. 
  • SS & SZ WARNING!  Sorry, but SS & SZ heads AND BLOCKS are milled 1.0-1.5mm from factory and will not work with our pistons.  For 10.5:1 compression, add $200 for special order and specify in "Customer Comment" box when ordering online.  

LINERS

These liners are rebored from good core 78mm 1600 liners. They are true to .001" for taper and out of round. They are fitted to our 81 mm pistons at .003" to .0035"

  • Our rebored liners are sold on an EXCHANGE basis.  However, you must send your core liners in advance of shipment.  Sorry, but we have to do this because 90% of customers never return cores.
  • NEW LINERS are available.  Add $350.  No exchange necessary.

UPGRADES:

You should consider the following upgrades:  (Specify upgrades in "Customer Comments" box, when ordering online.)

  • Upgrade to light weight pins (80 grams) for an additional $80.00.
  • Upgrade to Total Seal gapless second ring set for more HP.  $139.00 extra.
  • Upgrade to Total Seal gapless top ring set for even more HP.  $169.00 extra

FUEL OCTANE REQUIREMENTS:  All 10.5:1 compression engines with our pistons are quite content with 90-93 octane fuel.

HISTORY:  The Spruell Motorsport 1700 conversion goes back to 1970 when Autodelta built a special engine for the new IMSA series in the US.  They bored a 1600 GTA engine to 81mm, since 1700cc was the displacement limit of the class.  This factory Giulia Super finished that first IMSA race 1st in class and 1st overall, beating Camaros and Corvettes in that historic four-hour endurance race.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:  I converted my 67 Giulia Super 1600 to 1700cc in the early 80s.  Shortly thereafter, my dealership, Paul Spruell Alfa, started installing these in customer 1600 rebuilds with great success.  My old Super is still running great over 30 years later.

With our 424/425 camshaft combination and big valves, it can make about 150 very comfortable street performance ponies.  This has now become a universally celebrated success with 1600 builders.  The 1700cc race kit outsells the OEM 1570 kit by a margin of 10:1.
